Statement from CICU Interim President Dr. Drew Bogner on Governor Cuomo’s 2021-22 Executive Budget Proposal

“The state undoubtedly faces serious financial challenges, but provisions included in the Governor’s Executive Budget proposal would exacerbate those challenges by handicapping higher education’s ability to help in the state’s economic recovery. The Governor’s proposed elimination of Bundy Aid will impose an additional financial burden on college students and families who are least able to shoulder it. The Governor’s budget proposal cites emergency federal aid for colleges and students as an excuse to cut state-funded student aid programs, yet the cuts do not hold other programs and sectors that received comparable federal aid to the same standard. Although needed and welcomed, that federal relief was not nearly enough to calm the financial storm created by the pandemic, and will not be enough to close the gaps students and colleges face. State-funded programs that support students are important every year and they are vitally important this year when so many New Yorkers are struggling to recover from the economic impacts of the pandemic. New York must uphold its commitment to students by fully funding programs like Bundy Aid that provide essential support to students.

"We applaud Governor Cuomo’s proposal to streamline the program approval process that will enable colleges to respond quickly to help address the state’s workforce needs. However, safeguarding the state-funded financial resources that help students and families make higher education possible is the most important step in supporting New York’s most vulnerable students."
