Matter of Fact: Back To School: Where College Students Enroll in New York State

News Date: 2/8/2012

Albany, NY – Nearly 1.3 million students enroll annually in degree-granting colleges and universities in New York State; the largest percentage of them attend private, not-for-profit institutions (i.e., independent colleges and universities), according to recent data compiled by the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU).

Based on fall of 2011 degree credit enrollment from the New York State Education Department, the Independent Sector, New York’s private, not-for-profit colleges and universities, enrolled 486,040 or thirty-eight percent of students. The State University of New York (SUNY) enrolls 467,676 (37%); the City University of New York (CUNY) enrolls 272,128 (21%) and the Proprietary Sector enrolls 55,120 (4%).

Independent institutions of higher education have educated New Yorkers since 1754. Collectively, they operate on 186 main and branch campuses in New York State.

“New York State is a powerful talent magnet for students,” said Laura L. Anglin, president of CICU. “Independent colleges and universities, from those serving fewer than 100 students to those serving more than 40,000 students, offer students a choice in the type of educational experience that will best serve their needs and provide them the greatest chance at success.”
